Title: Solutions in Search of Problems: Critical Reflections on the Future of Online Learning

Visiting Scholar: Dr. Mark Brown, National Institute for Digital Learning, Dublin City University

Abstract: If online learning is the solution, then what is the problem? In exploring this question this talk critically reflects on some of the major trends and challenges facing higher education in the digital era, including the openness movement, the growth of mass pedagogy, the emergence of learning analytics, and efforts to unbundle the provision of higher education, to name a few. A number of tensions and powerful change forces associated with the growth of the online learning movement are then discussed in the context of wider social practice. Lastly, the presentation draws on a wider international perspective and argues that new and emerging models of online learning should be in the service of big ideas rather than being the big idea itself. Overall the intention is to help participants critically reflect on the digital future in thinking about higher education for change in uncertain times.
