Dr. Wendy Barber is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada. She recently won the UOIT Teaching Award of Excellence for 2014. She is a passionate advocate for Health and Physical Education. Her research interests lie in the areas of Teacher Development, Health Literacy, Physical Literacy, Mindfulness, Resilience and Wellbeing. In addition, she has published and presented papers internationally focused on Digital Learning Environments and Creating Authentic Online Communities.

2C%20including%20the%20World%20Economic%20Forum%20%282015%29%2C%20the%20Conference%20Board%20of%20Canada%20%282016%29%20and%20the%20Ontario%20Ministry%20of%20Training%2C%20Colleges%2C%20and%20Universities%20%282015%29.%20Important%20learning%20outcomes%20now%20include%20the%20development%20of%20complex%20problem-solving%20skills%2C%20critical%20thinking%20skills%2C%20creativity%2C%20coordinating%20with%20others%20%28including%20collaboration%20and%20negotiation%29%2C%20innovation%2C%20and%20emotional%20intelligence.%20In%20order%20to%20create%20learning%20environments%20that%20enhance%20these%20qualities%2C%20a%20learner-centred%20approach%20to%20developing%20confidence%20and%20competence%20in%20technical%20skills%20is%20required.%20This%20paper%20describes%20the%20results%20of%20a%20preliminary%20investigation%20comparing%20results%20gained%20from%20students%27%20self-predicted%20competencies%20and%20frequency%20of%20use%20of%20digital%20tools%2C%20and%20actual%20demonstration%20of%20technical%20skills%20and%20competencies.%20Using%20a%20validated%20survey%20tool%20called%20the%20General%20Technology%20Competency%20and%20Use%20%28GTCU%29%20survey%2C%20students%20answered%20questions%20related%20to%20their%20self-reported%20frequency%20and%20use%20of%20various%20types%20of%20digital%20technologies%2C%20including%20mobile%20devices%2C%20laptops%2C%20tablets%2C%20smart%20phones%20and%20wearable%20technology.%20The%20tool%20produces%20an%20individual%20profile%20based%20on%20four%20intersecting%20orders%20that%20include%20the%20technical%2C%20cognitive%2C%20social%20and%20epistemological%20orders.%20In%20addition%2C%20it%20has%20been%20used%20to%20compare%20trends%20across%20groups%20over%20a%20wide%20variety%20of%20demographics.%20The%20GTCU%20is%20an%20effective%20means%20to%20enable%20and%20empower%20individuals%20and%20teams%20to%20build%20on%20successes%2C%20identify%20areas%20for%20improvement%2C%20and%20most%20importantly%2C%20build%20capacity%20for%20self-determined%2C%20ongoing%20learning.%20In%20a%20digital%20culture%2C%20individuals%20most%20frequently%20consult%20the%20Internet%20for%20information%2C%20using%20You-tube%20and%20social%20media%20to%20connect%20and%20learn%2C%20or%20by%20%5C%22%20Googling%20it%20%5C%22%20to%20find%20what%20they%20need%20to%20know.%20This%20mode%20of%20gaining%20knowledge%20focuses%20on%20the%20individual%20defining%20what%20it%20is%20they%20want%20to%20learn%20and%20choosing%20the%20method%20of%20learning%20it.%20By%20developing%20a%20personal%20profile%20of%20how%20individuals%20use%20technology%2C%20the%20GTCU%20tool%20can%20provide%20a%20platform%20through%20which%20individuals%20may%20effectively%20identify%20their%20skill%20levels%2C%20and%20then%20choose%20a%20learning%20goal%20that%20will%20help%20them%20become%20more%20effective%20in%20their%20uses%20of%20technology.%20Pedagogical%20approaches%20aimed%20at%20facilitating%20the%20development%20of%20these%20qualities%20are%20shifting%20toward%20personalized%20and%20individualized%20modes%2C%20and%20learner-centred%20approaches%20wherein%20individuals%20can%20identify%20their%20skills%20and%20select%20open%20educational%20resources%20that%20can%20help%20them%20enhance%20their%20digital%20skills.%20The%20tool%20designed%20for%20the%20study%20reported%20here%2C%20the%20General%20Technology%20Competency%20and%20Use%20%28GTCU%29%20survey%20tool%2C%20enables%20learners%20and%20educators%20to%20create%20a%20personal%20profile%20that%20indicates%20how%20they%20use%20a%20broad%20variety%20of%20technology%2C%20measuring%20their%20confidence%20and%20frequency%20of%20use.%20It%20is%20clear%20that%20%5C%22%20learners%20are%20responding%20to%20the%20new%20technical%20and%20social%20opportunities%20with%20little%20help%20from%20the%20formal%20education%20system%2C%20%5C%22%20and%20there%20is%20%5C%22%20evidence%20of%20deep%20networking%20and%20knowledge%20building%20in%20learners%27%20informal%20practices%20%5C%22%20%28Littlejohn%2C%20Beetham%20%26%20McGill%2C%202012%2C%20p.%20551%29.%20As%20a%20result%2C%20allowing%20learners%20to%20build%20a%20personal%20profile%20of%20technical%20skills%2C%20and%20identifying%20for%20themselves%20which%20areas%20they%20need%20to%20develop%20further%20is%20a%20valuable%20skill%20set%20that%20aligns%20with%20qualities%20identified%20by%20industry%20as%20important%20outcomes%20of%20higher%20education.%20References%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222017-10-27%22%2C%22proceedingsTitle%22%3A%22%22%2C%22conferenceName%22%3A%2227th%20International%20Council%20for%20Open%20and%20Distance%20Education%20%28ICDE%29%20World%20Conference%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ISBN%22%3A%22%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.researchgate.net%5C%2Fpublication%5C%2F318278048_Critical_Competencies_for_Success_in_Digital_Learning_Environments_A_Comparison_of_Actual_vs_Predicted_Competencies%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22GUFAPXI2%22%2C%22ZH5M6KT7%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222022-05-26T15%3A46%
